Semperfli Fly Tying Wire 0.2mm
is a fly tying wire, non tarnishing and perfect for chironomids or buzzers and nymphs and as ribs on salmon flies and streamers. Measuring 0.2mm or 0.008 inch diameter the non tarnishing means it can even be used in saltwater. Wire 0.2mm is part of our large range of wire colors suitable for most flies
Having developed and manufactured our own computerised spooling machinery Wire 0.2mm is put onto the spool with touching turns in totally level traverse, why is this important? With Wire 0.2mm you will not get a birds nest when tying flies or have wires trapped. Our spools have a removeable cap to re-trap the wire once you have removed a section to tie your flies.
Tie on Wire 0.2mm and tie off with thread. Rather than cutting simply wiggle and it will break saving damage to your scissors
There are 20m / 21.8 yards (approx ) per spool of Wire 0.2mm
A fine, lacquer-coated fly-tying wire (~0.20 mm diameter, ≈ 32 AWG). Non-tarnish finish keeps colours bright and protects the wire from blackening. Typically on compact spools (often ~20–30 m depending on colour/retailer).
Why Pick 0.2 mm (vs 0.1mm / 0.3mm)?
- Works for most trout size flies: visible rib/segmentation without getting bulky.
- Adds a touch of weight for sink and keel, but still fine enough for slim bodies.
- Ideal for #12–16 nymphs/wets and many stillwater lures.
Typical Uses & Patterns
- Ribs: Pheasant Tail, Hare’s Ear, Copper John (lighter versions), Diawl Bach, Cruncher, Buzzers (#12–16).
- Tags & hotspots: small butt tags on spiders/soft hackles without dominating the fly.
- Counter-ribbing: over quill, biot or peacock to armour delicate bodies.
- Mini wire bodies: slim nymphs or micro buggers where you want a subtle metallic sheen.
Colours
Classic copper, gold, silver, black, gunmetal, plus dyed olives, browns, reds, chartreuse, hot colours. The clear lacquer keeps hues bright and resists tarnish.
Quick Hook Size Guide
- #18–20: 0.2 mm works, but keep spacing open (or drop to 0.1 mm).
- #16–12: sweet spot for ribs/tags/counter-ribs.
- #10–8: works for bolder ribs; if you want even more presence/weight, step up to 0.3 mm.
Pro Tying Tips
- “Helicopter off” the tag: twist the wire until it snaps clean for a flush finish (don’t scissor it).
- Keep even, modest tension so wraps sit tight without kinking.
- For counter-ribs, space slightly wider so the wire shows through dubbing/quill.
- Start your rib one turn back from the tail to keep the abdomen slim on smaller hooks.
- When using with beads/jig hooks, tie the wire off behind the bead before seating to avoid trapping it in the slot.
- For two-tone ribs, twist two colours of 0.2 mm together—more visibility without jumping to 0.3 mm.
Quick Chooser (Wire Sizes)
- 0.1 mm: micro ribbing, #16–22, minimal weight.
- 0.2 mm: all-round trout rib for #12–16; subtle weight & visibility.
- 0.3 mm: bold ribs/tags, #8–12, lures/streamers; faster sink and extra durability.
